The award winners were selected by an independent panel of community leaders with one exception. The Wild South Board of Directors chooses the recipient of the Wild South Award of Distinction recognizing a significant contribution to Wild South’s mission to protect and restore native ecosystems in the Southeast

The Wild South Award of Distinction:
John Wilson-for his dedication and commitment to the effort to protect 25,500 acres of the Pisgah National Forest as the Grandfather National Scenic Area.

Outstanding Educator in Conservation:
John Huie–for his years of service to environmental education through Outward Bound, the Warren Wilson College Environmental Leadership Center, and Muddy Sneakers.
Outstanding Volunteer in Conservation:
Sherman Stambaugh–for his decades of work on the hiking trails of Western North Carolina as a 37-year member of the Carolina Mountain Club.
Outstanding Business in Conservation:
The Marketplace Restaurant–for their commitment to sourcing local ingredients and supporting the conservation of family farms.
Outstanding Scientist in Conservation:
Bill McLarney–for being a tireless advocate for the Little Tennessee Watershed and organizing an army of “citizen scientists” to monitor the health of rivers and streams.
Outstanding Activist in Conservation:
Lenny Kohm–for empowering thousands of people across the country to bring about positive change in order to protect the natural world and our natural heritage.
