Big Tom Gap Bumble Bee Search – June 30
Join us on the Black Mountain Crest Trail to search for imperiled Bumble Bees! This will be a more rigorous outing as the total mileage will land between 6.5 to 7.5 miles on the rugged Black Mountain Crest Trail. We’re aiming to make it out to Big Tom Gap where there is some forest edge habitat with scrubby vegetation that should reward us with a good number of blooms and, hopefully, bumble bees.
We’ve decided to head to this trail because a Rusty Patched Bumble has been seen here before, in 1971. Let’s hope they’re still persisting. We may revisit this area again in August when a different plant community will be flowering.
