Caney Creek Falls

Saturday, March 1, 2014
Distance:  2.75 miles roundtrip
Level of challenge:  Moderate
Leader:  Janice Barrett
All ages welcome
This is a great hike for kids and families!
Let us know you’re coming!  Group size is limited and hikers must SIGN UP in advance.
Caney Creek Falls is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Alabama.  The hike begins on a closed road off Winston County Road 2 that eventually becomes a trail that steeply descends into Caney Creek canyon.  The walk to the first waterfall (pictured above) is one mile.  The surrounding forest is cove hardwood and Eastern hemlock set in a sandstone canyon greened by ferns and mosses.
There will be one shallow creek crossing on the downstream hike.  Rocks and creekbanks are very slick.  The climb out of the canyon is quite steep for the first quarter mile.
Be prepared.  Footwear must be sturdy with good reliable tread.  Wool socks are recommended because they keep feet warm even when they’re wet.  Wear clothing that is layered for warmth and bring a rain jacket if rain is in the forecast.
Bring a backpack with lunch, snacks, drinking water; a camera.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome and must be kept on leash.
After signing up and arriving at Warrior Mountains Trading Co., park on the south end of the building and come into the store.  We will gather at the Wild South picnic table toward the back of the store promptly at 9:30 a.m. After a brief introduction, we will drive up to the trailhead.  We will return to the store by mid-afternoon.
Wild South hikes are free of charge but donations are gratefully accepted!  There will be a donation bucket on the Wild South table.  All hiker donations directly support Wild South’s work in the Bankhead National Forest.
