Helping Hands Workday – Sipsey Wilderness
May 18, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Helping Hands Volunteer Workday on Trail 206 in the Sipsey Wilderness!
Saturday, May 18
Where to Meet: The Wild South Office (552 Lawrence St., Moulton, AL) at 8:30 AM.
Workday Details: This month’s volunteer workday will take place on Trail 206 in the Sipsey Wilderness. Our plan for the day is to clear trail obstructions such as blown-down trees, and encroaching vegetation. All necessary tools will be provided.
What to Expect: Be prepared to hike approximately 5 miles while carrying tools, stopping to perform trail maintenance. There will be several small stream crossings. Be prepared for the heat, and the presence of ticks.
What to Bring: A backpack with work gloves, lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. We recommend bringing an Epi-Pen if needed for insect sting allergies. Dogs are not allowed on workday trips.
What to Wear: Wear comfortable clothing that’s both appropriate for the weather, as well as protective against sharp tools and briars. We recommend long pants, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
Tick Protection: For protection against ticks, we recommend Permanone or Sawyers. These are effective permethrin products to be sprayed on clothing only (NOT on skin), and must be left to dry for 4 hours prior to wearing. These products don’t have a strong odor (like other sprays), allowing you to enjoy all the good smells of the forest. **NOTE: ticks are thriving and numerous this time of year. It’s very important to protect yourself against the diseases they carry!
RSVP Required: Contact kim@wildsouth.org or call/text (205) 516-8029. If meeting at the trailhead works best for you, let us know when signing up.
(Wild South’s Helping Hands Volunteer Program is funded by the generous donations of individuals like you, and by a matching grant from The National Forest Foundation.)
