Wild Wednesday Hikes to Kinlock Falls & Turkeyfoot Falls
July 17 @ 9:30 am
Come Adventure with Wild South!
Wednesday, July 17th
Hike #1 to Kinlock Shelter & Kinlock Falls
This 2-part outing will begin on Kinlock Rd. on the far western edge of the Sipsey Wilderness. This area, called the Kinlock Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 because of its incredibly significant Native American and Civil War history. Kinlock Shelter was once a sacred site for Native Americans, who lived there between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. From the shelter, we will drive down to Hubbard Creek to explore this beautiful, deep-shaded stream!
Leader: Janice Barrett
Distance: 1 mile roundtrip to Kinlock Shelter, then 0.5 mile roundtrip to Hubbard Creek
Hike #2 to Turkeyfoot Falls
Turkeyfoot Creek is a tributary of the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, the only Wild & Scenic river in Alabama! This hike is located on the southern edge of the Sipsey Wilderness, and will begin at the Sipsey Rec. Area on Cranal Rd. (County Rd. 6). The trail, located in Turkeyfoot Canyon, is rough and unmaintained. Expect some briefly steep terrain and narrow creek crossings. On the return hike, we will enjoy swimming, wading, and exploring in the shallow water of the Sipsey Fork!
Leader: Kim Waites
Distance: Approx. 2 miles roundtrip
Fee: There is a $3 per car day-use fee
