Honoring Rep. Ronnie Flippo and the Sipsey Wilderness
Beginning in 1982, Representative Ronnie Gene Flippo, 5th Alabama District, sponsored and introduced legislation to expand the Sipsey Wilderness Area multiple times, finally resulting in the passage of the 1988 Sipsey Wild and Scenic River and Alabama Wilderness Additions Act, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on October 28, 1988. Congressman Flippo characterized this accomplishment as the “most gratifying thing I have done in my entire congressional career.”
On May 17th, at the Borden Creek Trailhead leading to the Sipsey Wilderness, Wild South honored Flippo, dedicating a new educational kiosk and plaque. More than 60 people attended the event with smiles on our faces and warmth in our hearts!
