Come hike with Wild South in the Bankhead National Forest!

Saturday, February 7, 2015

9:30 a.m.

Warrior Mountains Trading Company

Sign up at Janice at wildsouth.org or 256-974-6166 (advance registration is required)

Leader:  Janice Barrett

Distance:  3 miles or less

Level of challenge:  Moderate

All ages welcome

Wherever this hike leads us, it will be amazing.  In winter, water is everywhere in an abundance of forms:  tumbling cascades, plunging waterfalls, sculpted daggers of ice.

We will explore streams, bluff shelters and the wonders of nature in a forest subdued by winter.

This hike is suitable for all ages and most abilities.  Our hikes fill up fast, so sign up quick!

Bring a backpack with lunch, snacks, drinking water.

Wear layers of clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable for hiking.  Tip:  wool socks keep our feet warm even when they’re wet.  Know the weather forecast and let that guide preparations.  Bring rain gear if there’s a chance of rain.

Footwear must be sturdy and warm with good tread.  No slick soles!

Expect uneven, rough, rocky, rooty trail, slick rocks, mud, shallow, narrow stream crossings and terrain that is typical of a not completely tamed, half wild landscape.

A word about dogs:  Well-behaved, good-natured dogs that get along peaceably with other dogs and humans may come on our hikes and must remain on leash at all times.

After signing up, meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company (intersection of Highways 33 and 36 south of Moulton) at 9:30 a.m.   Park on the south end of the building and come into the store.  Join your group at the Wild South picnic table toward the back of the store where there will be sign-in sheets, a donation bucket, and your fearless leader.  We will return by mid-afternoon.

Wild South hikes are free of charge but as a non-profit organization, we love it when people donate to keep our programs going!
