Rating: Moderate, off-trail
Ages 8 and above welcome
This hike will be in the northern section of Bankhead in the upper Beech Creek watershed. Volunteer hike leader Carroll Wilson will lead hikers to Tapsville Falls then continue downstream to the east branch of Beech Creek. This is a beautiful sandstone canyon! There is no established trail, so hikers will walk along the edge of the stream and must occasionally cross it.
Expect off-trail hiking, modest elevation change, fairly gradual slope into and out of canyon, slick rocks and some creek crossings.
Bring a backpack with lunch, snacks, drinking water. Remember your Epi-Pen is severe reaction to insect stings is a possibility.
Dress for the weather in layers. Bring rain gear if rain is forecast. Footwear should be closed-toe, sturdy, with good tread for slick surfaces.
After signing up in advance (required – group size is limited), meet at the Warrior Mountain Trading Company (click link above for map) a few minutes before 9:30 a.m. Park on the south end of the building (far, far away from the diesel pumps). At 9:30, we will gather at the Wild South picnic table in the back of the store. On the table, find sign-in sheets and the donation bucket.
