Walls of Jericho
Walls of Jericho
by Carson Feather Whitmore
Get outside and experience Walls of Jericho – for one of the most gorgeous hikes in the South, covered with unique wildflowers, canyons, waterfalls and picturesque views! This popular spot, called the “Grand Canyon of the South”, is a haven for wildlife and naturalists. The gorge is carved out of limestone, the same rock strata that makes Alabama known for its high concentration of caves. The name is said to have come from a traveling minister who, in the late 1800s, was so amazed by the gorge that he gave it a name of biblical proportions.
The gorge itself is part of a large tract within State of Alabama’s Forever Wild Land Trust. Conservation initiatives have helped protect the abundant wild species found in this area. Among them are: the Tennessee cave salamander, numerous rare species of mussels, the endangered palezone shiner fish, and the cerulean warbler, which migrates yearly from South America. 10 miles of trails are available to explore the Walls of Jericho and its flora and fauna.
With over 21,000 acres dividing the state lines of Alabama and Tennessee, the park is a shining example of diverse Southern Appalachian ecosystems and resembles parts of the nearby Wheeler Wildlife Refuge or Bankhead National Forest (2 hour drive). Wild South works to inspire people to enjoy, value and protect the wild character and natural legacy of the South. -And Walls of Jericho is the perfect place to experience and enjoy your time in the wilds – and become inspired to conserve places like this for generations to come. Whether you are looking for an easy hike or a strenuous journey, a beaten path or an abundance of climbs and stream crossings, this part of North Alabama has an outing for you. Wild South works with partners at Alabama Outdoors to protect wild places and to get people outside on the trails.
