Destination:  Holmes Chapel Falls

Leader:  Janice Barrett

Distance:  2.5 – 3 miles round trip

Level of challenge:  Moderate  (read hike description)

Holmes Chapel Falls is located on the east side of the Bankhead National Forest.  This is an off-trail hike (there is no trail) on which we will walk up a tributary of Rush Creek for about a mile to the waterfall.  The forest in this area is mainly Eastern hemlock and hardwoods.

Be prepared for walking on uneven, sometimes steep, and rocky, rooty terrain.  With all the rain we’ve had, the ground will be quite wet and rocks will be slick.

Wear clothing layered for the weather and footwear that is sturdy, warm and somewhat water repellent. Wool socks are recommended because they keep feet warm even when they are wet.  Traction is important, so make sure soles are not slick.

Bring a small backpack with lunch, snacks, drinking water.

Dogs on Wild South hikes:  Well-behaved, sociable, non-threatening dogs who are friendly to people and other dogs are welcome on Wild South hikes.  Dogs must be leashed and directly under the owner’s control at all times.

After signing up, meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company (click on map link above) at 11312 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL at 9:30 a.m.  Park on the south end of the building and come into the store.  Make your way to the Wild South picnic table toward the back where you will find sign-in sheets and a donation bucket.

Wild South hikes are free of charge but donations to support our programs are accepted and appreciated.
