Big bluff shelter

Hike with Wild South to some of the largest rock shelters in the Bankhead National Forest!

Saturday, February 22

9:00 a.m. at the Warrior Mountains Trading Company

Sign up HERE!

Leader:  Grant Posey

Distance:  Approx. 3 miles roundtrip

Rating:  Moderate

All ages welcome

The rock shelters are located in the northwest part of the Bankhead National Forest, west of the Sipsey Wilderness.  The hike will begin on the Old Byler Road.  Grant will lead the group into the forest via an old road, then leave the road to follow the contours of the terrain into the upper drainages where the rock shelters are located.

This hike is mostly off-trail.  Elevation changes are fairly gentle.

Be prepared for off-trail hiking through the forest, which means there will be uneven footing with roots, rocks, etc. concealed beneath a heavy layer of fallen leaves.  Footwear should be sturdy with good tread for slippery rocks and mud.

Bring a backpack with lunch, snacks, drinking water.  Watch the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Bring rain gear is there is mention of rain or snow.

Group size is limited and advance sign-up is required.

After signing up, meet at the Warrior Mountains Trading Co. (see link above for map) at a few minutes before 9:00 a.m.  Park on the south end of the building and come into the store.  At 9:00, the group will meet with Grant at the Wild South picnic table near the back of the store.  Here hikers will find the sign-in sheet and donation bucket.

Wild South hikes are free of charge, but your donation to Wild South will be very much appreciated and will be put to work right here in the Bankhead National Forest.  Thank you!
