May 2025 Trail Days

Communities continue to come together to recover from Hurricane Helene.  Wild South is supporting efforts on many trails and rivers.  Challenging, rewarding, inspiring!

• Projects on the Noli and in Unaka Mountain Wilderness are mostly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
• Projects in Linville Gorge Wilderness are on Thursdays and Saturdays.

OLD 105 CLEANUP –  Two volunteer teams, two truckloads of trash, and dozens of campsites.  Roadside campsites north of Conley have now been cleaned and had their fire rings maintained to help prevent wildfires.

 

TABLE ROCK GAP – With roads to Table Rock cut by landslides, Table Rock Gap Trail became the primary access.  Working alongside the MST Section 4 Task Force, Outward Bound, University of Florida, and the USFS Grandfather Ranger District, Wild South has been rapidly turning TR Gap from a miserable slog into one of the finest trails around!

 

CONLEY COVE – Wild South capped the winter’s recovery efforts on Conley with removal of the last few root balls and repair of a dangerous switchback corner damaged by the flooding stream.

 

LGT (BYNUM-to-BRUSHY) – In Linville Gorge, the big push in recent weeks has been recovery of the Linville Gorge Trail between its intersections with the Bynum Bluff & Brushy Ridge Trails.  Hurricane Helene was not kind to the LGT.  So many trees blocked the trail that we stopped counting.  The landslides, root balls, and flood did even more damage than the fallen trees.  Despite these challenges, the community is succeeding in recovering the trail and making it safe again.
