October 2025 Trail Days

Yes, Wild South’s community day this Saturday, Sep 27, at Fonta Flora Brewery’s Whipporwhill Farm location is still on despite the weather forecast.  We may hang out in the old milk parlor.  But, yeah, bring an umbrella. 🙂

October marks a transition from summer projects to winter.  Come out and enjoy the fall colors!

On the Appalachian Ranger District, there will be crosscut, trash cleanup, and hurricane damage surveys as we prepare for upcoming projects.

  • Oct 9 – Shinbone crosscut
  • Oct 17 – Beauty Spot trash cleanup and sunset
  • Oct 16, 23, 30 – trail damage surveys

On the Grandfather Ranger District, we’re wrapping things up at Sitting Bear, preparing for big trail reroutes on upper Pinch-In and Rock Jock.  Connecting Rock Jock to Pinch-In past Mountain Goat Falls will be especially rewarding.

  • Saturdays – Oct 4, 11, 18, 25.

Give us a shout when you can make it out, and we’ll keep you posted on that day’s details.

JONAS RIDGE TRAIL REROUTE –  The reroute at Sitting Bear has just about reached a milestone to where we can park the project for a little while and turn to other priorities.  Hurricane recovery is just gonna be like that: constant juggling but overall making progress.  The new trail above Sitting Bear Rock is now in service, and we’ll add more steps at steep places in the new year.

BABEL TOWER TRAIL DRAINS – Dug a half a dozen big drains to get water out of the trench section of lower Babel Tower Trail.  It was a bit warm for digging, and maybe we’ll wait until it cools off to do more.  But warm weather meant we got to spend the day with a timber rattler who was working his way up the ridge same as we were.
