November 2024 Trail Days, October Photos

Things are still unsettled by Hurricane Helene.  Projects are different.  Schedule is different.  What’s the same is Wild South’s focus on National Forest communities.  Communities always have been, always will be, the cornerstone of conservation success.

In coming months, we’ll have a mix of projects, and there will be something for everybody.  We’ll still be getting out into the communities — checking on folks, delivering supplies, cleaning up homes.  We’ll also be cooperating with the Forest Service to assess damage, clear trails, clean up rivers.

■ November weekday projects are mostly out in the communities of Mitchell, Yancey, and Unicoi Counties.

■ November Saturday’s will include some clearing trails in Linville Gorge, and some projects out in the communities of Avery/Burke/McDowell Counties.

■ Wilson Creek projects have a more flexible schedule, with A Clean Wilson Creek coordinating.

If you’d like to join us for volunteer events, the best way to do that is to let us know what days you are available.  In the past, we’ve been able to provide a calendar of upcoming projects, but disaster relief needs are changing too fast for that.

 

October and Early November Photos

WILSON CREEK – Wild South joined forces with A Clean Wilson Creek to clean out a flooded home near the Visitor Center.

 

NEWBERRY CREEK – DAY 1 – In a joint effort with Baptists on Mission, a church group from The Chapel in Indiana, and a crew of off-duty Marines, two Wild South teams took on a huge cleanup challenge on Newberry Creek.

 

NEWBERRY CREEK – DAY 2 – The second day at Newberry was about pulling soaked insulation out of the house, and also clearing tons of trees and mud piled up against the outside walls.
